I gave the GOP money to repeal the CA gas tax. I gave money to Planned Parenthood 3 times this year. So they both hound me.
I have no political home.

What so you got against a gas tax? If the money goes to roads it makes the most sense. Use roads more, pay more. Don’t use roads? Don’t pay.

Isn’t the tax on cars supposed to cover road infrastructure already?

Supposed to, probably. It falls short, or gets sequestered for other things. But a gas tax seems proportionate to use, which makes more sense to me.

That’s sales tax. It is not meant to be used for transportation infrastructure.
Gas taxes are low. If you want roads to drive on, you need to pay for them. Opposing gas taxes pushes more roads private, and tolls suck.

In my 34 year on this planet I’ve never received political email. Not once. Well, nothing my spam filter didn’t catch.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought you guys had both a sales tax and a proper tax for vehicles

I agree with the theory of the gas tax, and it’s also a incentive for buying a electric or a more fuel efficient car, but I thought that the US had a proper tax on cars (just like there is one for real estate) and that should be used in road infrastructure. But looks like there is only an annual registration one and that’s it.

I feel like most sane, logical, educated Americans have no political home.

You can be Christian, conservative, pro life, anti gay, pro gun, pickup driving, blue collared, patriotic, in denial of climate change, and in total support of the troops
OR,
Anti Christian, liberal, pro choice, pro equal marriage rights, anti gun, car hating, white collared or hippie, anti-America, anti-military, and militant about climate change.
Choose your side.

Lol it would be interesting to find out what % of Americans fit into one of those binary choices. 10% maybe?

10% might be generous!

The sad part though, is that I’ve met plenty of people on BOTH sides that are so brainwashed by their own echo chamber that they’ve convinced themselves that they fit one of those two descriptions. So the 10 percent might not be far off.

I suppose... I think it leads back to the human need for acceptance. I like the second amendment, so naturally I would want to associate with like-minded others. It’s a conservative, traditional viewpoint, and many other things fit into that viewpoint... “Traditional” things like back when we didn’t give them damn women the vote or allow “the blacks” to own property. And if I engage in a conversation about conservation or curbing global climate change, then I must also believe cars are evil, the troops are baby killers, and people who have been content to put forth zero effort in life deserve an automatic $32k/year salary for the most menial of tasks.
Cognitive dissonance leads to conflict... it’s easier to just agree with my new friends...
